How does succession bring landscapes to life?

Nature rarely stands still, and today's environmental challenges demand landscapes that can adapt, mature and evolve over time. At OKRA, we work with natural succession as a design tool, creating living landscapes that harness ecological processes by establishing the right conditions and guiding development. Through natural succession, we create resilient landscapes by:

  • Supporting biodiversity through a wider range of habitats
  • Reducing long-term maintenance and management costs
  • Building ecosystems that adapt naturally to environmental change
  • Regenerating degraded sites through natural growth and renewal
  • Offering changing seasonal experiences for people and wildlife
  • Strengthening ecological connectivity across the wider landscape
How does succession bring landscapes to life?

Designing with time

Natural succession is nature’s gradual transition from open ground to complex plant communities. For us, it is also a way of shaping landscapes that leave room for growth, change and surprise. Through initial planting, grazing regimes, adaptive management and habitat frameworks, we guide natural processes without prescribing every outcome. As wetlands establish, meadows bloom, woodlands mature and wildlife returns, the landscape evolves, revealing new colours, diverse species and fresh experiences as wildflowers give way to seed heads and meadows gradually become shrubland. With each passing season, we nurture these natural rhythms as part of the landscape’s identity, deepening people’s connection to place and fostering a lasting sense of stewardship.
